What is an Escort?
An Escort is a person over the age of 18 years who is regarded by the requesting Medical Practitioner, as an appropriate and responsible adult to meet an eligible patient’s needs, during the period of transport and/or accommodation and during treatment.
Can I have an Escort?
The delegated officer may approve travel and if applicable, accommodation assistance for an Escort, where they have formed the opinion that the Escort is necessary to provide assistance that cannot otherwise be provided by support services at the place of treatment.
When is an Escort automatically approved?
Eligible patients under 16 years of age are automatically approved for an Escort. Additional provision for approval of an Escort for a patient up to the age of 18 years exist, depending on individual clinical and social circumstances.
If the patient is travelling interstate for surgery or intensive treatment e.g. radiation therapies, non surgical cancer treatments, cardiology and neurosurgery, an escort can be automatically approved.
Can I have more than one Escort?
In exceptional circumstances, more than one Escort may be approved for travel. For example, a life threatening condition exists to the extent that there is a high risk to the patient’s recovery in the context of the episode of care.
